Employees assist George County "Farm Safety Day Camp" April 4, 2008
Singing River Electric employees recently helped organize George County's "Farm Safety Day Camp" April 3-4. The event was held at the Multipurpose Arena in George County where 500 local six grade students were instructed on all types of safety information including electrical, health, gun, ATV, tractor, animal and much more.
"We had the best safety year on record," stated general manager and
CEO Lee Hedegaard. "And growth returned to normal levels with 1,755 new
members added this past year."
Service area improvements and further implementation of the automated
meter reading service were highlighted as well as concerns for what lies
ahead for the electric industry and how that may affect Singing River
Electric members.

Singing River Electric sends local youth to Youth Leadership Seminar
March 24, 2008
Three high school juniors represented Singing River Electric Power Association at the Electric Power Associations of Mississippi Youth Leadership Workshop in Jackson on March 5-7. The students will also participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., this summer.
Philip Bridges of Perry Central High School, Laura Polk of East Central High School and Robert Wineski of Ocean Springs High School were chosen as Singing River Electric's representatives for the youth leadership program.
Candidates were required to have a 3.0 grade average and reside in
Singing River Electric's service area to apply for the program. After being
selected by their school, the students participated in interviews at the
cooperative.

NHN Grants awarded to Fontainebleau VFD and City of Gautier
March 3, 2008
Singing River Electric Power Association recently awarded two Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Grants totaling nearly $5,000 to Fontainebleau Volunteer Fire Department and City of Gautier.
Fontainebleau Volunteer Fire Department used grant funds to purchase replacement “attack lines” fire hose, the first hose off a fire truck in fighting fire and the most used. The Department lost its attack lines hose in Hurricane Katrina and has been using hose donated by fellow fire departments.
Funds awarded to City of Gautier will purchase educational placards to be mounted along the City Park fishing pier/boardwalk as well as binoculars and steel canopy tents for use at ecotourism events held at the park.

Singing River Electric recognized for best practices with lineman program

Singing River Electric was recently recognized for its successful sponsorship of a lineman training program by Chartwell's Best Practices for the Utility and Energy Companies.
In an effort to provide a knowledge base to potential apprentice line workers, Singing River Electric partnered with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1999 to offer the Apprentice Electric Lineman Training program at the College's George County Center.
Today, Singing River Electric still plays a major role in administering the program, and all of Singing River Electric's new apprentice linemen hires are graduates of this program.
